The Gardens at Glemham Hall, Suffolk

"Won't you come into the garden?
I would like my roses to see you"

- Richard Brinsley Sheridan (actor/playwright)

The gardens of Glemham Hall originated with the construction of the 'new' Hall itself, which dates back to 1560. As structural changes were made to the hall, including the addition of a Georgian facade, the gardens and parkland were equally changed. Much of what you see is the product of Repton's design, for which he produced a Red Book in 1791.

Today, life is being breathed back into the gardens. You will enjoy exploring the beautiful walled rose-garden, with a summer house, lily-pond, classical urns as well as traditional English symmetry. Our herbaceous garden offers a delightful contrast to the traditional rose garden; a haven of wild flowers, herbaceous borders, sculpture and home to our green house. Beyond the marquee you will also find the commemorative Britten garden, recently created and designed to mark the centenary of Benjamin Britten, a world-renowned composer from Suffolk and old friend of Major Hope-Cobbold.

The wide lawns and garden are framed by yew hedges, a topiary and an avenue of Irish yews; spreading cedars and beeches complete a very traditional setting within an ancient 300 acre park of veteran oak trees (some not less than 600 years old) and many other ancient tree species.

Meet the team

Our gardeners work tirelessly to maintain our glorious rose garden and herbaceous borders. With the help of students from nearby Otley College, the garden has been transformed over the past few years.

Recent renovations include the repositioning of hundreds of metres of original york stone paths. The Summerhouse, which sits neatly into the corner of our walled garden, has also been fully restored and is licensed for outdoor wedding ceremonies complemented by the ongoing restoration of the many classical urns within the garden.
